E-MAIL RUSSERT, MTP: ADDRESS HERE CC OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS: INFO here
SAMPLE LETTER BY: Nancy S. Brown-Meneux and Jane Darden Brown
Dear Meet The Press,
We have been watching Meet The Press for 35 years and hope you will answer us with a realistic response and not an automated canned "thank you for your letter". Over the past year I have lost all good faith in the judgment of your editors and Mr. Russert. In fact, most mainstream media, most notably NBC, MSNBC, and CNN, seen worldwide, have lost the ability to do any sort of investigative questioning of guests invited to speak, in effect supplying a "bully pulpit". I see a significant bias. An unfair bias. It appears that your show and others now have a political agenda of their own. Journalism has turned into a political machine, in effect turning its back on the majority of Americans.
The same spokespeople appear so many times over and over, for instance Mr. William Bennet, a most holier than thou morality judge who has on many occasions spewed venom while at the same time taking the moral high ground. Do you not see what this man in particular is doing? My God, open your minds, hearts, and souls. If you do not believe that good, strong, patriotic Americans can see through this anointed moral voice of America and his rhetoric, you are so sadly mistaken. Mr. Bennett is not the only person with solid morals, in fact I doubt the veracity of his "wisdom". He seems to hate Bill Clinton and will do anything to demonize Democrats by continuing his rant on your show every time you give him the chance, which seems rather often. Yippee, another bully pulpit!
I am afraid of what is happening in this country. Meet The Press is ignoring and sweeping under the rug such issues at the very center of our Democracy, important constitutional issues of Separation of Church and State, Freedom of Speech, and Peaceable Assembly. Why hasn't Mr. Russert hit this issue with force and seriousness?
The association of noted Republicans such as Senator Trent Lott, Representative Bob Barr and Attorney General John Ashcroft with known separatist groups such as the Southern Partisan magazine, the Council of Conservative Citizens is very serious and should be exposed (these organizations, which, by the way, cleaned up there websites and actually changed and disguised their messages during Mr. Ashcroft's hearings and subsequent confirmation, a forethought, I'm sure. I have talked to the New York Times and the Southern Poverty Law Center about this.) This is when the Fourth Estate needs to inform the people. Your show has done nothing in the realm of responsible journalism. Wake up and smell the coffee, Mr. Russert!
Ah! Welcome back the McCarthy Years. Shame on you.
We dissent.
